BLACKPINK wins 2 VMAs, BTS named top group for 4th time

Several K-pop groups have won honors while lighting up the stage at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), one of the four leading pop music honors in the U.S.

At Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, BLACKPINK on Aug. 28 won the awards for Best Metaverse Performance and Best K-Pop.

Lisa, the Thai member of the girl group, won Best K-Pop for her solo album “Lalisa,” which was released in September last year. Mentioning the quartet’s fan club Blink and the VMAs in her acceptance speech, she said, “Thank you so much for making this happen.”

To her fellow BLACKPINK members, she thanked them in Korean for their support, adding, “I love you.”

As the first K-pop girl group in history to perform on the ceremony’s main stage, BLACKPINK performed its latest single “Pink Venom” to heat up the atmosphere at the event.

In 2020, BLACKPINK received the VMA for Song of Summer for its hit “How You Like That.”

This year’s VMAs also saw BTS named Group of the Year for the fourth straight year, though the boy band did not attend the event. BLACKPINK was also nominated for that category along with other big names like the American hip-hop duo City Girls, hard rock band Foo Fighters and alternative rock band Imagine Dragons, the Italian rock band Maneskin, which won last year’s Eurovision contest, the preeminent American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and Silk Sonic, a project duo formed by Bruno Mars.

BTS was nominated in six categories: Group of the Year, Best K-pop, Best Choreography, Best Metaverse Performance and Best Visual Effects.

Another K-pop boy band, Seventeen, earned the VMA for Push Performance of the Year, which honors outstanding new acts, for “Rock With You,” the title song from the group’s mini-album “Attaca.”

Launched in 1984, the annual VMAs have been hosted by MTV, a 24-hour music channel in the U.S.
