Seoul: BMW Korea announced Thursday it has signed an extension with the LPGA Tour to run a tournament in South Korea until 2029. BMW Korea has been the title sponsor for the BMW Ladies Championship, the lone LPGA tournament held here each year, since 2019.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the first two editions of the tournament were held in the southeastern metropolitan city of Busan in 2019 and 2021, with the 2020 event canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament moved to the eastern Gangwon provincial town of Wonju for 2022, before finding a new home in Paju, northwest of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, for 2023 and 2024.
In a statement, BMW Korea said it aims to move the tournament around the country to “establish unique heritage and tradition as a sustainable tournament.” This year’s tournament will go from Oct. 16 to 19 at a venue to be announced later. There will be no cut at the 72-hole event featuring 78 players, including some South Korean amateurs.
