Seoul: Public broadcaster MBC announced on Monday that its shareholders have confirmed the appointment of Lee Sung-joo, the managing director of its subsidiary iMBC, as the new president and chief executive. Lee's appointment was officially approved during a shareholders' meeting held at MBC's headquarters located in western Seoul.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Sung-joo was nominated by the board of directors at the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, which is MBC's largest shareholder. This nomination took place on Sunday and aimed to replace the outgoing chief, Ahn Hyung-joon. Ahn's term, initially set to end in February, was extended due to delays in the appointment process until Lee's recent nomination.
Lee Sung-joo has had a long-standing career with MBC, having started as a reporter in 1995. Over the years, he has held various positions, including chair of the MBC unit of the National Union of Media Workers, director of the company's media planning bureau, and managing director of iMBC.
