SEOUL - The head of South Korea's broadcasting regulator has resigned amid escalating pressures from opposition parties threatening impeachment.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Hong-il, the chair of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), stepped down on Tuesday. He will attend his retirement ceremony, foregoing a scheduled Cabinet meeting later in the day. This resignation comes just as the main opposition Democratic Party is pushing to expedite an impeachment motion against him before Thursday. The motion is linked to controversies surrounding recent appointments that Kim oversaw at the KCC, which included new board members for a controlling shareholder of a public broadcaster and two other public broadcasting entities: Munhwa Broadcasting Corp., Korean Broadcasting System, and Korea Educational Broadcasting System.
