Cheong Wa Dae Anticipates Legal Verdict on Death Penalty for Ex-President Yoon

Seoul: Cheong Wa Dae announced on Tuesday its expectation for a court to deliver a verdict for former President Yoon Suk Yeol in line with legal standards and public expectations, following the special counsel's demand for the death penalty over his attempt to impose martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a special counsel team demanded the death penalty for the ousted president during the final hearing of the trial on Tuesday. This demand comes just over a year after Yoon declared martial law on December 3, 2024, aiming to eradicate what he described as anti-state forces.

The ruling Democratic Party (DP) described the sentencing request as "a commonsense conclusion." DP spokesperson Park Soo-hyun commented that the demand reflects a firm stance that the law will hold accountable those who attempted to destroy the constitutional order and overturn the people's sovereignty by force. He emphasized that the request aligns with public expectations and urged the court to show no leniency in its impending ruling.
