Seoul: Cheong Wa Dae denied a news report Friday that National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac met with a senior Russian government official during a visit to Kazakhstan last month.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Donga Ilbo newspaper cited multiple unnamed diplomatic sources claiming that Wi held a closed-door meeting with the Russian official during his May 28-30 trip. The reported purpose of the meeting was to address South Korea-Russia tensions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Cheong Wa Dae stated that the national security adviser's visit to Kazakhstan was solely for bilateral consultations between South Korea and Kazakhstan, dismissing the report as false. The office emphasized that South Korea and Russia are maintaining necessary communication through embassies and other diplomatic channels to manage bilateral relations and safeguard their citizens and businesses.
