Civic Groups Accuse Broadcast Watchdog Chief of Misusing Corporate Credit Cards

SEOUL — Civic organizations have lodged a formal complaint against Lee Jin-sook, the newly appointed head of the Korea Communications Commission, alleging misuse of corporate credit cards during her tenure as president of MBC’s Daejeon branch from 2015 to 2018.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the complaint filed Wednesday accuses Lee of occupational embezzlement, citing her expenditure of approximately 140 million won (about $101,631) on personal luxuries such as luxury hotels, high-end restaurants, and golf courses, using corporate funds. The groups also highlighted incidents where Lee allegedly used the corporate card for personal expenses during holidays and weekends close to her home. Additionally, they claim that Lee continued to use the corporate card even after resigning from her position, including purchasing nearly 15 million won worth of wine. In her defense, Lee has stated that all expenditures were made in accordance with the company’s internal guidelines.
