SEOUL - The South Korean parliament's science, ICT, broadcasting, and communications committee has confirmed that the confirmation hearing for Lee Jin-sook, the newly nominated chief of the state broadcasting watchdog, will be held next Wednesday and Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee, a seasoned journalist formerly with MBC, was nominated earlier this month by President Yoon Suk Yeol following the resignation of the previous Korea Communications Commission Chairman, Kim Hong-il. Born in 1961, Lee graduated from Kyungpook National University and earned distinction as the country's "first female war correspondent" with her coverage of the Gulf and Iraq Wars. While the hearing is regarded largely as a procedural step—since the position does not require National Assembly endorsement—it marks a significant step in the formalization of her appointment. In South Korea, the position of prime minister is the only Cabinet post requiring parliamentary approval.
