Tokyo: Czechia manager Pavel Chadim expressed optimism about his team's chances against the favored South Korea in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC), emphasizing the importance of building momentum one inning at a time. "I believe that a good start means a good tournament and I am sure that both of the managers know what it means," Chadim stated during a pregame press conference at Tokyo Dome. The match-up is scheduled for 7 p.m. as Czechia kicks off its Pool C games against South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chadim acknowledged the strength of the Korean team, expressing hope for a strong performance from his own players. Czechia's recent history in the WBC includes a solitary win against China in 2023, with losses to South Korea, Japan, and Australia. This year, Chinese Taipei has taken China's place in the tournament, joining the four other returning nations in Tokyo. Chadim recognizes Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Australia as formidable opponents, with Czechia being seen as the underdog.
When asked about the upcoming challenge against defending WBC champions Japan, Chadim highlighted the significance of maintaining scoreless innings as victories in themselves. "We need nine wins. That's all," he remarked. "I think the Korea game is similar. If we have nine wins, it means nine scoreless innings. We have a chance."
Czechia infielder Terrin Vavra echoed Chadim's sentiments, acknowledging the talent within the South Korean team. Vavra, who played alongside South Korea's outfielder Jahmai Jones in the minors in 2022, commented on the dedication and skill of the Korean players. "I know how capable and how talented they are, and in Korea, how serious they take baseball, how much work they put in and how really talented that group is," Vavra said, looking forward to the competitive match-up.
