Seoul: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on Wednesday that the military is undergoing a "great transformation" by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology across all defense sectors. This strategic shift aims to cultivate an elite armed forces capable of meeting the demands of future warfare and addressing troop shortages.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn made these remarks at a forum focused on defense AI strategy. The ministry is actively transitioning the military towards a model driven by AI and unmanned systems. This shift is seen as essential for adapting to the evolving landscape of warfare and ensuring national security.
"Our military is pushing for a 'great transformation of defense AI' to apply AI technology across all defense sectors, and giving all-out efforts to reform the military into a smart elite armed forces grounded on advanced technology," Ahn stated in his opening speech, which was delivered by Kim Seong-jun, the head of the office of personnel and welfare.
Ahn emphasized the military's focus on developing a "sovereign AI" to avoid reliance on foreign technology and prevent data leaks abroad. Plans are in place to create the necessary infrastructure and enhance access to defense data to support this initiative.
During the forum, experts underscored the importance of establishing a legal and institutional framework for defense AI to ensure its credibility and safety. Legislation is currently under review at the defense committee at the National Assembly, which outlines procedures for the rapid application of AI technology in the military while ensuring its reliability.
The forum convened approximately 150 participants, including representatives from various military branches, the state arms procurement agency, and the National Assembly, among others.
