Defense Minister Vows Assistance in Probe into Hanwha Aerospace Plant Explosion

Daejeon: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on Monday that his ministry would provide technical assistance in determining the cause of a deadly explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace factory. The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, resulted in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to two more.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the blast took place at the company's plant in the central city of Daejeon. Minister Ahn emphasized on X that his ministry, in collaboration with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), will work diligently to uncover the cause of the explosion. He also committed to devising safety measures for defense industry workers to prevent similar incidents in the future. The minister extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery.

The Daejeon plant is known for manufacturing large propulsion engines and tactical surface-to-surface missile systems. Following the accident, DAPA has deployed officials to the site to evaluate the damage. Smoke was seen billowing from the factory, as captured in a photo provided by a reader on June 1, 2026.
