Democratic Party Initiates Impeachment Process Against Prosecutor General in South Korea

SEOUL: The Democratic Party (DP), South Korea's main opposition party, has announced plans to impeach Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung following the decision by prosecutors not to indict the first lady, Kim Keon Hee, over allegations of stock manipulation. This decision has spurred significant political controversy, marking a critical moment in South Korean politics. According to Yonhap News Agency, the impeachment move was confirmed by Jo Seoung-lae, a senior DP spokesperson, after a Supreme Council meeting. The prosecutor's office in Seoul had earlier declared that the first lady was not aware of her accounts being used in a stock price manipulation scheme linked to Deutsch Motors Inc., a BMW dealership, between 2009 and 2012. This announcement came nearly four and a half years after the investigation began. The DP, holding a majority in the National Assembly with 170 out of 300 seats, appears to have sufficient support to pass the impeachment motion, which would be a historic move as no prosecutor general has ever been impeached in the country. During the meeting, DP leader Lee Jae-myung expressed severe criticism of the prosecutor's decision, equating it to a betrayal of legal integrity, and announced the party's resolve to take decisive steps. The impeachment process, as outlined by South Korean law, requires the backing of at least one-third of the National Assembly members to introduce a motion, and a majority vote to pass it.
