SEOUL: The Democratic Party (DP) has sharply criticized a lawmaker from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) over a leaked message suggesting collaboration with Ukraine to target North Korean soldiers stationed in Russia. The message, captured during a parliamentary audit, has sparked controversy and calls for apologies from the government and the ruling party for exacerbating security concerns. According to Yonhap News Agency, the controversy began when a Telegram message from Rep. Han Ki-ho of the PPP was inadvertently exposed. The message, addressed to National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik, proposed missile strikes on North Korean units in Russia in coordination with Ukraine, framing it as a strategic move to employ psychological warfare against North Korea. The exchange drew further attention when Shin appeared to respond favorably to Han's suggestion. During a Supreme Council meeting, DP leader Lee Jae-myung demanded apologies from the government and the PPP, accusing them of increasing public anxiety amid an already tense security climate. DP Rep. Kim Min-seok echoed these sentiments, denouncing the proposal as a reckless move that could draw the conflict in Ukraine closer to Seoul, thereby endangering civilians. In response, the PPP criticized the DP for not condemning North Korea's deployment of soldiers as "human shields" in the conflict. PPP Rep. Kang Dae-sik attacked the DP for its perceived leniency towards North Korea, describing the soldiers as "cannon fodder mercenaries" sent to fight in Ukraine. Adding to the tension, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Thursday that South Korea might consider supplying arms to Ukraine, declaring a commitment not to remain passive in light of Pyongyang's military support to Russia.
