Seoul: Former Land Minister Won Hee-ryong is set to appear for questioning regarding a controversial expressway construction project that was ultimately scrapped. The project allegedly involved the family of former first lady Kim Keon Hee, who is currently imprisoned, as announced by a special council team.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Won, who served as the land minister under then-President Yoon Suk Yeol from May 2022 to December 2023, is scheduled to appear for questioning at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The special council team released this information in a notice to the press.
The Seoul-Yangpyeong expressway project became a significant political issue after allegations surfaced suggesting that its route was altered to financially benefit Kim's family. The new endpoint of the highway was reportedly near land owned by Kim's family. Won had previously denied these allegations and decided to scrap the project.
In March, the special council team imposed a travel ban on Won and seized his mobile phone last Wednesday as part of the investigation.
