Goyang: Former major leaguer Choi Ji-man expressed his desire to keep the spotlight on young prospects during the upcoming Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) draft, stating that student-athletes should be the main focus.
According to Yonhap News Agency, despite Choi's intentions, he is anticipated to be a top contender at the KBO draft on September 21. The 35-year-old, who has played 525 games in Major League Baseball (MLB), is expected to be a first-round pick. Choi has been playing with the Ulsan Whales in the Futures League, which serves as a feeder circuit for the KBO. He recently participated in a pre-draft workout alongside other hopefuls.
The annual workout is designed for players not currently registered with high school or university teams, allowing them to showcase their talents to KBO scouts. Eligible participants include those who have played professional or amateur baseball overseas without prior KBO experience, those who left South Korean high school or university teams, and players from the Futures League or independent teams recognized by the KBO.
Choi has maintained a batting average of .308 in 20 games for the Whales, with one home run, seven RBIs, and an on-base plus slugging of .847. He reiterated his support for young athletes, expressing his wish for them to secure higher draft positions and substantial signing bonuses. Choi has observed the talent within the junior national team and sees great potential among the players.
Choi's journey began when he signed with the Seattle Mariners out of high school in 2009, making his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2016. Throughout his MLB career, Choi achieved 67 home runs and 238 RBIs. In 2020, he made history with the Tampa Bay Rays as the first South Korean position player to participate in a World Series.
As the draft approaches, Choi admitted to feeling increasingly anxious, reminiscent of his high school days. He reflected on how his career might have unfolded had he not moved to the United States. Choi also mentioned receiving calls from friends on various KBO teams, eager for him to join them next season. Regardless of the outcome, Choi is determined to perform at his best and is optimistic about his prospects if he remains healthy.
