Fishing Boat Capsizes Near Jeju, Nine Rescued and Two Missing

Jeju:A fishing boat with 11 individuals aboard capsized near the southern resort island of Jeju, resulting in nine rescues and two missing persons, as reported by authorities.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 29-ton coastal longline fishing boat overturned about 65 kilometers northwest of Chagwi Island at 3:04 a.m. The Jeju Coast Guard reported that nine foreign crew members, including eight Indonesians and one Vietnamese, were rescued and are in stable condition.

The missing individuals include the South Korean captain and one Indonesian crew member. Search and rescue operations are underway, with helicopters, patrol vessels, a Navy vessel, and several civilian fishing boats involved in the effort.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook has directed authorities to use all available resources for the rescue mission, emphasizing the importance of confirming the number of people on board and ensuring the safety of rescue personnel in light of local weather conditions. Initially, the boat's departure report indicated eight people on board, but authorities discovered there were actually 11.
