Former PPP Leader Han Dong-hoon Emphasizes Loyalty to the People After Election Defeat

SEOUL — In his first public statement since resigning, former leader of the People Power Party (PPP) Han Dong-hoon underscored the fundamental duty of politicians to remain loyal to the electorate, following his party's significant loss in the recent parliamentary elections. Han, who stepped down as leader of the PPP's emergency committee, made these remarks in a Facebook post on Saturday, roughly ten days after the party's defeat on April 10.

According to Yonhap News Agency, his commitment to the public remains unwavering despite the political turbulence following the election results and subsequent internal party conflicts. This statement comes amidst accusations from Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, another prominent figure within the PPP, who earlier on Saturday criticized Han for allegedly betraying President Yoon Suk Yeol. The accusations stem from previous disagreements related to the first lady’s acceptance of a luxury handbag among other issues.

"I will never betray the people no matter what happens," Han declared on Facebook. "The only thing politicians should never betray is you, the people. Efforts to correct what is wrong are not betrayal, but courage."

Reflecting on the electoral defeat, Han addressed his supporters directly, stating, "The election defeat is my loss, not your loss." He expressed remorse towards his supporters, adding, "I owe you a debt. I am sorry."

Han also hinted at his future in politics, suggesting that he aims to develop a more "sophisticated and energetic leadership" style, supported by the understanding of the people. However, he indicated that he may not seek re-election as party leader in the upcoming PPP national convention.

In related news, presidential and party officials reported on Sunday that President Yoon proposed a luncheon meeting with Han and other members of the party’s emergency committee. However, Han declined the invitation, citing health concerns. Lee Kwan-sup, the presidential chief of staff, conveyed the luncheon invitation for Monday, to which Han responded that he is currently unable to attend due to health reasons.
