Former PPP Leader Han Dong-hoon Speaks Out on Loyalty to the People Post-Election

SEOUL — In his first public remarks since his resignation, former People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon emphasized the importance of political fidelity to the citizens, amidst a backdrop of recent electoral defeat and internal party strife. Han stepped down from his role following the PPP's significant loss in the April 10 parliamentary elections, a gesture aimed at taking responsibility for the party's performance.

According to Yonhap News Agency, about ten days after his resignation, he addressed the core duty of politicians to their constituents, amidst accusations from Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo. Earlier that day, Hong had charged Han with betraying President Yoon Suk Yeol, pointing to past disagreements over issues including a controversy involving the first lady's acceptance of a luxury handbag.

"I will never betray the people no matter what happens," Han asserted in his post. "The only thing politicians should never betray is you, the people. Efforts to correct what is wrong are not betrayal, but courage."

Han also took the opportunity to speak directly to his supporters, personalizing the election results as his own failure, not theirs. "The election defeat is my loss, not your loss," he explained. "I owe you a debt. I am sorry," he added, expressing a heartfelt apology to his followers.

The former leader also hinted at his ongoing commitment to political life, indicating his plans to enhance his capabilities. "I firmly believe that challenges can be overcome when a sophisticated and energetic leadership meets the understanding and support of the people," Han commented, suggesting his intention to further his studies and possibly prepare for future leadership roles, though he implied he might not contest the party leadership in the upcoming national convention.
