Seoul: The government is set to activate an emergency transport task force this week in response to an anticipated strike by unionized workers at the state-run Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL), officials announced on Monday. The strike, organized by the KORAIL labor union, is a move to demand improved working conditions, including a revision of performance-based bonuses to be calculated at 100 percent of base pay, up from the current 80 percent.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the task force will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and will operate continuously from Tuesday until the conclusion of the strike. The team will include representatives from the Korea Airport Corp., the Korea Express Bus Transportation Association, and local governments from Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province.
In anticipation of the strike, authorities have prepared to deploy all available substitute personnel to ensure train services continue on major routes. Additionally, they plan to enhance alternative transportation options by increasing the availability of express buses and domestic flights.
