Seoul: The government has initiated a high-level task force designed to stabilize consumer prices, focusing on essential commodities that directly impact people's daily lives, such as food. This strategic move underscores the administration's commitment to addressing inflationary pressures and the cost-of-living challenges faced by citizens.
According to Yonhap News Agency, consumer prices reported a 2 percent increase from the previous year in January, a figure partly attributed to the stability in petroleum product prices. Despite this alignment with government targets, Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol highlighted ongoing concerns, noting that past price hikes continue to exert a significant burden on the public.
In response, the government has pledged to carry out thorough inspections of essential goods, particularly those integral to everyday life. The task force, which will operate intensively during the first half of the year, aims to closely monitor and regulate these critical consumer areas.
Chaired by Finance Minister Koo and supported by the head of the Fair Trade Commission as vice chair, the task force is structured into three specialized teams. Their responsibilities include inspecting unfair trade practices, scrutinizing fraudulent claims for policy support, and reviewing distribution frameworks to ensure fairness and transparency in the market.
