SEOUL — The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has announced that intense monsoon rains are expected to persist across the country until late Wednesday, with the southern regions experiencing the heaviest downpours. These conditions have prompted the issuance of a heavy rain warning, with rainfall rates reaching up to 50 millimeters per hour.
According to Yonhap News Agency, rainfall ranging from 5 to 20 millimeters per hour had already been affecting areas including North Jeolla Province and parts of North and South Gyeongsang provinces. The KMA forecasts that these downpours will continue throughout the day, potentially delivering 10 to 40 millimeters of rain per hour, while certain areas in South Gyeongsang Province and the southern part of North Gyeongsang Province could see up to 50 millimeters per hour. Meanwhile, other regions are expected to experience a temporary respite in rainfall until nighttime. Overall, the nation is bracing for a total of 30 to 80 millimeters of rain by late Wednesday, with some areas, including southern Gyeonggi Province, the central region, and parts of Gangwon Province, anticipating over 120 millimeters.
Additionally, the greater Seoul area and other central regions are set to receive torrential rainfall of up to 50 millimeters per hour overnight. In contrast, Jeju Island is facing high temperatures, with apparent temperatures expected to reach up to 33 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 35 degrees in the island’s northern and eastern parts. Daily highs across major cities have been recorded between 23.5 degrees Celsius in Seoul and 25.2 degrees Celsius in Busan as of early Tuesday morning.
