Seoul: Korea's Joseon Dynasty, which reigned from 1392 to 1910, made a significant move by erecting a stone monument on Mount Baekdu to delineate the border with China, then governed by the Qing Dynasty. This event marked a pivotal moment in the historical relations between Korea and China.

According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1956, Rhee Syng-man was elected as South Korea's president for a third consecutive term. Rhee, who was a prominent advocate for Korean independence from Japanese colonial rule between 1910 and 1945, became South Korea's first president in 1948. However, after his re-election to a fourth term in 1960, allegations of election rigging emerged, leading to his resignation amid widespread student protests against election misconduct and government corruption.

In 1967, the tomb of King Munmu from the Silla Kingdom, which existed from 57 B.C. to 935 A.D., was discovered in the waters off the coast of Wolseong in North Gyeongsang Province. This archaeological find shed light on the burial practices of ancient Korean kingdoms.

The political climate in South Korea was tense in 1980 when tens of thousands of university students gathered at Seoul Station to protest the imposition of martial law. In 1995, Seoul hosted the 44th annual meeting of the International Press Institute (IPI), a global organization comprising editors, media executives, and leading journalists. This event highlighted South Korea's growing role in the global media landscape.

In a more recent development, 2013 saw North Korea rejecting a South Korean proposal for talks concerning the return of raw materials and finished products from a suspended inter-Korean industrial complex. North Korea criticized the proposal as a "crafty ploy" intended to deflect domestic criticism and mislead public opinion regarding the complex's halt.

In 2017, North Korea announced the successful test-firing of a new mid-to-long-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, emphasizing that the U.S. mainland was within its reach.
