SEOUL: Today marks a series of historic events in Korean history, ranging from the foundation of a major newspaper to significant diplomatic and military developments involving both South and North Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, on this day in 1906, the Kyunghyang Shinmun, a prominent local daily, was established, becoming an influential voice in the media landscape of South Korea. In more turbulent times, specifically on this date in 1950, United Nations soldiers successfully captured Pyongyang during the Korean War, which began when North Korea's military forces invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950. This event was a critical moment in the UN's northward advance during the conflict. Further strengthening its international relations, in 1962, South Korea established diplomatic ties with Senegal, enhancing its global diplomatic outreach. Another noteworthy event occurred in 2005, when South Korea announced the completion of the Peace Dam after 18 years of construction.
