Vienna: South Korea has formally notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its intention to begin consultations on a safeguards arrangement for envisioned nuclear-powered submarines, the agency chief has said. This development signifies South Korea's plans to advance its naval capabilities with conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.
According to Yonhap News Agency, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced this notification during the IAEA Board of Governors meeting held in Vienna. The move comes as part of South Korea's strategic efforts following security agreements reached at a summit between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump in October last year. The discussions are expected to address the necessary safeguards to ensure that South Korea's nuclear-powered submarines adhere to international standards and regulations.
