SEOUL: In a recent ruling, the Seoul High Court increased the prison terms for an executive and three employees of an SK hynix Inc. subcontractor, following their involvement in a significant technology leak scandal. According to Yonhap News Agency, the court of appeals on Friday handed down harsher sentences in a case involving the leak of crucial semiconductor technology to a competing firm in China. The executive, aged 60, previously received a one-year sentence from the Seoul Central District Court for his role in leaking SK hynix's proprietary technology and stealing advanced technology from a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. His sentence has now been extended to one and a half years. During the appellate trial, the court found additional evidence of guilt, particularly that the executive was also responsible for leaking technology jointly developed with SK hynix to another Chinese semiconductor company. Consequently, his prison term was increased by six months. Furthermore, the appellate court r evised the sentences of three other employees of the subcontractor, now ranging from one to one and a half years. Additionally, the subcontractor company itself faced a steep increase in financial penalties, with the fine raised from 400 million won (approximately US$730,000) to 1 billion won.
