According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea Defense Intelligence Command detected the breach about a month ago, involving sensitive information that includes identities of agents stationed overseas. The Defense Counterintelligence Command has launched a thorough investigation to address the exposure, which affects agents operating both under official cover as diplomats and those working undercover. The leakage has led to some agents being recalled home due to the risks associated with their compromised identities.
The investigation has pointed to a civilian official at the Korea Defense Intelligence Command as a potential source of the leak. Classified files were found on the official’s personal laptop, raising concerns about how such sensitive information was transferred outside secure military networks. The official has countered these allegations by claiming that the laptop was hacked.
This breach is not the first of its kind for the Korea Defense Intelligence Command, which faced a similar situation in 2018 when it was discovered that an official had been selling classified information to foreign entities since 2013. The ongoing investigation seeks to determine the full extent of the current leakage and to assess the potential damage to South Korea's security operations, particularly those focused on North Korea.
