Seoul: A police officer at Jeju Seobu Police Station is facing serious allegations after it was revealed that he had falsely closed a missing-person case, which has now resulted in the discovery of the missing individual found dead. This revelation comes in the wake of another similar incident involving the officer, identified only as A, who is now under arrest for dereliction of duty.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the officer had previously closed the case of a missing woman under similar circumstances, raising doubts about the integrity of police investigations. The missing man, whose case was also prematurely closed by the officer, was found deceased a day after his family filed a renewed missing person report. The mishandling of the case has sparked concerns over whether the man's life could have been saved had a thorough investigation been conducted from the onset.
The officer reportedly informed the deceased man's family on July 2 that he had made contact with the missing individual, who purportedly wished to remain undisclosed to his relatives. Based on this claim, the case was closed. Similarly, in May, another case involving a missing woman was closed by the officer just hours after it was reported, allegedly without any supporting evidence of contact. The woman remains unaccounted for, and the missed opportunity for investigation has prompted further scrutiny.
These incidents coincide with upcoming changes to the Criminal Procedure Act, set for October, which will see police gaining exclusive investigative authority. This shift in power dynamics has raised public concerns, especially following recent revelations of police evidence manipulation in a separate murder case in Gwangju.
The Jeju incidents have intensified fears regarding the potential implications of granting police such extensive powers. Historically, police have had the discretion to shelve cases and have faced accusations of downplaying investigations linked to fellow officers' families. As police powers are set to expand, there is growing pressure on authorities to enhance investigative skills and enforce stricter ethical standards to ensure that officers are fully equipped to handle their increased responsibilities appropriately.
