Daejeon: The justice ministry announced on Saturday that it has initiated an investigation following reports of 100 rounds of live ammunition missing from a prison in Daejeon.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the investigation was prompted after discrepancies were discovered between the recorded number of rounds and the actual inventory during a five-day inspection at the prison's armory that began on Monday. The rounds in question are 9 millimeter bullets typically used in handguns.
The ministry has not yet determined if the ammunition is genuinely missing or if there was an error in the ledger's recording. Authorities are focusing on uncovering the timing and circumstances of the disappearance and assessing any potential breaches of protocol.
In response to the incident, the justice ministry plans to carry out inspections across all correctional facilities in the country and will develop strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
