Gwangju:In South Korea, the Korea Baseball Organization's (KBO) regular season is nearing its end with one coveted postseason spot still available. Two teams, the LG Twins and the Kia Tigers, are vying for the third seed and a bye to the first round of the playoffs.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the KT Wiz have already secured the best record in the regular season, earning them a direct entry to the Korean Series. The Samsung Lions are confirmed for the second spot, granting them a bye to the second round of the playoffs.
The Doosan Bears, following a loss to the Twins, are set to finish in fifth place, making them the visiting team in the upcoming wild card round. Meanwhile, the Twins and Tigers are battling for the No. 3 seed. The team finishing in fourth will host the wild card round and needs only a win or tie in two games to advance, while the Bears must secure two consecutive victories to move forward.
The Tigers, currently holding a record of 76-62-2, have four remaining games. After a day off, they will face the NC Dinos in Changwon on Friday and then conclude the season at home in Gwangju against the SSG Landers, Lotte Giants, and the Twins. Despite a poor record against the Dinos, the Tigers have performed well against their upcoming opponents, including an 8-7-0 mark against the Twins, whom they recently swept in Seoul.
The Twins will play two games against the Giants in Busan before their crucial final game against the Tigers on Monday in Gwangju. This final matchup could be decisive for the Twins' postseason fate, as they recently broke an eight-game losing streak, while the Tigers have won four of their last five games.
Finishing third rather than fourth offers significant advantages under the KBO's postseason format, including more rest and strategic pitching rotation for the playoffs. In contrast, the fourth seed faces a more grueling schedule, potentially exhausting their top pitchers in the wild card round and leaving them at a disadvantage in subsequent games.
