According to Yonhap News Agency, on this day in 661, the Tang Dynasty of China intensified its efforts to conquer the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo. The attack, led by General Su Dingfang, marked another attempt to penetrate the Korean Peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period. This era saw the peninsula divided among Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. The alliance between Silla and the Tang Dynasty eventually led to the fall of Goguryeo, integrating its cultural legacies into the succeeding Goryeo Kingdom.
On August 19, 1903, the Joseon Dynasty, marking a later historical period, signed a trade agreement with Denmark, broadening its international relations. Further into the 20th century, legendary Korean swimmer Cho Oh-ryun crossed the strait between Busan and Tsushima in 1980, underscoring Korea’s prowess in sports and endurance.
