Kiwoom Heroes Sign Ha Hyun-seung With Record Rookie Bonus

Seoul:The Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) have awarded a record-breaking rookie signing bonus to their top draft pick, Ha Hyun-seung. The talented two-way prospect has received a bonus of 1.6 billion won (approximately US$1.2 million), surpassing the previous record of 1 billion won set by former Kia Tigers pitcher Han Ki-joo in 2006.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ha was selected first overall at the recent KBO draft. The 18-year-old excelled as both a pitcher and hitter during his time at Busan High School. In the draft announcement, Kiwoom Heroes' general manager, Huh Seung-pil, highlighted Ha's dual capabilities as a pitcher and position player.

During his latest season, Ha achieved a pitching record of 4-0 with an impressive 0.39 ERA over 42 2/3 innings in 15 games, striking out 77 batters while walking just 11. As a hitter, he maintained a .383/.495/.593 batting line with three home runs and 21 RBIs across 24 games.

At the U18 Asian Baseball Championship, Ha demonstrated his prowess by going 3-0 in 15 2/3 innings without allowing a run, amassing 25 strikeouts and walking only two batters. He played a pivotal role in South Korea's 2-0 victory over Japan in the final, pitching seven scoreless innings and conceding just one hit.

Despite interest from Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, Ha opted to start his professional journey in South Korea. The Heroes acknowledged his potential and decision to stay local, reinforcing their commitment to his development.

Ha expressed gratitude towards the Kiwoom Heroes, stating his excitement to join a team he admired and his eagerness to learn from the experienced players within the organization.
