Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung instructed his aides Thursday to swiftly pursue defense reforms centered on building a "smart" military through advanced technologies and selective conscription. Lee gave the instruction at a meeting with his senior aides at Cheong Wa Dae, emphasizing the need to move away from an "inefficient military structure" that relies heavily on personnel and infantry due to the country's persistently low birth rate.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee underscored the importance of developing a military that is not only elite but also equipped with advanced technologies. He stated, "We must introduce selective conscription and quickly and thoroughly pursue defense reforms that transform our military into a smart, elite and strong military centered on advanced equipment and technologies." Lee highlighted the importance of redesigning the system to allow the youth, who form the backbone of national defense, to plan for a better future.
In South Korea, military service is mandatory for all able-bodied men, requiring at least 18 months of service, while others may be exempt or need to carry out alternative forms of service. Lee called for policies to ensure that military service leads to good job opportunities, education, and stable wealth accumulation, stressing, "It is a big responsibility of the government to make sure people do not think their time in the military is a waste of their lives or a loss."
