SEOUL - Rep. Lee Jae-myung, former leader of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP), announced his candidacy for a second term as party chief in the upcoming elections scheduled for next month.
According to Yonhap News Agency, "I will sacrifice everything I have to change 'today's despair' into 'hopeful tomorrow,'" Lee stated during a press conference at the DP's office in Yeouido, emphasizing his commitment to refocusing the party on public welfare and technological advancements, including a proposal for a four-day workweek by 2035. On foreign policy, Lee prioritized peace over military deterrence. His re-election bid comes after a resignation last month, required under party rules for candidates seeking leadership positions. Lee, a prominent figure in the liberal party and potential presidential candidate for 2027, faces multiple scandals, including a controversial land development project and past financial dealings with North Korea. Despite these challenges and a violent attack in January, Lee expressed his determination to face any threats boldly.
