Seoul: LG Electronics Inc. announced a significant decline in its net profit for the third quarter, citing increased logistics costs as the primary cause. The South Korean electronics giant reported an 81.4 percent decrease in net income compared to the previous year, with earnings for the July-September period reaching 90.2 billion won (US$65.4 million). According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Electronics' operating profit also experienced a downturn, falling 20.9 percent year-on-year to 751.9 billion won, despite a 10.7 percent increase in sales to 22.17 trillion won-the highest for any third quarter. The operating profit fell short of expectations, landing 22.4 percent below the average estimate from a Yonhap Infomax survey. The company attributed its weak bottom line to rising global maritime logistics costs, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and heightened U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. Despite these challenges, LG Electronics saw some success in its home appliances sector, which main tained steady performance with an 11.7 percent increase in sales to 8.3 trillion won and a 5.5 percent rise in operating profit to 527.2 billion won. In contrast, the TV division reported sales of 3.7 trillion won and an operating profit of 49.4 billion won. The vehicle component solutions segment, part of LG's strategic shift towards business-to-business operations, achieved 2.6 trillion won in sales and an operating profit of 1.1 billion won. Meanwhile, the business solution division recorded sales of 1.4 trillion won, but suffered an operating loss of 76.9 billion won. Looking ahead, LG Electronics anticipates a gradual recovery in earnings during the fourth quarter, driven by potential interest rate cuts. However, the company acknowledges ongoing concerns over geopolitical risks and the uncertainty of the U.S. presidential election. To adapt to emerging market demands, LG plans to diversify its home appliance offerings and expand its business ventures, including subscription services. The company also intends to capitalize on the projected growth in the global TV market by enhancing its webOS partnerships and responding to consumer needs. Despite current challenges in the electric vehicle market, LG Electronics is committed to strengthening its presence and improving profitability in this sector.
