Seoul: The military will seek to acquire some 11,000 commercial drones for training by the end of this year, the defense ministry announced Tuesday. This initiative is part of the military's effort to enhance its operational capabilities through cost-effective weapon systems.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry plans to open the bidding process this week for potential manufacturers, with proposals to be accepted by the end of May. The final contract is expected to be signed in July, following necessary verification procedures.
This acquisition is a crucial component of the ministry's "500,000 drone warrior" project. The initiative aims to ensure all conscripts are well-versed in drone technology, thereby enhancing the military's overall combat effectiveness. By focusing on drones equipped with key components developed using homegrown technology, the ministry also aims to support the domestic drone manufacturing sector.
Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back introduced the project in September, emphasizing its dual benefits: bolstering the military's drone operations and providing conscripts with skills applicable in the drone industry post-service.
