Seoul: The South Korean military is set to deploy advanced infrared smoke canisters designed to enhance troop protection by obstructing infrared sensors, announced the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on Monday. The new technology aims to replace outdated models and bolster defense capabilities amid evolving surveillance and weaponry threats. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, a contract valued at 7.5 billion won (approximately US$5.5 million) has been awarded to Samyang Chemical Co. for the production of these canisters. The project, spanning from this year until 2026, will see the canisters being implemented in both ground and maritime operations starting next year. This initiative follows the successful development of the canisters in 2020, which are now ready for full-scale deployment. The current smoke screen canisters, in use since the 1980s, do not provide protection against infrared light, which has become a significant vulnerability wit h the advent of advanced surveillance equipment and guided weapons employing infrared technology. The new canisters are designed specifically to counteract these threats efficiently. DAPA has also highlighted the safety of the new smoke canisters, noting that extensive testing has confirmed the smoke to be non-carcinogenic and exhibit low toxicity, thereby minimizing potential health risks to troops and the environment. This development marks a significant step forward in modernizing the military's equipment and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of its operations in various combat scenarios.
