SEOUL: North Korea has sent approximately 20 balloons filled with trash across the border into South Korea, according to the South Korean military on Sunday. These actions occurred from Saturday night into early Sunday morning, with around 10 objects from the balloons discovered in Cheorwon, a border county in South Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed that the balloons carried household waste, such as paper and vinyl. The military noted that none of the items were hazardous. The balloons, measuring between 2 to 3 meters in diameter and 3 to 4 meters in length, typically contain several smaller bags, resulting in a discrepancy between the number of balloons and the number of objects found. Since late May, North Korea has launched over 5,000 trash balloons into South Korea. This activity is reported as retaliation against anti-Pyongyang leaflets distributed by activists and North Korean defectors residing in South Korea.
