N. Korea Requests U.N. Investigation into Alleged S. Korean Drone Intrusion

Pyongyang: North Korea has requested a U.N. investigation into its claim that South Korean drones infiltrated Pyongyang’s airspace in October, a government source said Monday. The request points to rising tensions between the two countries over the alleged incident.

According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korea recently submitted a request to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for a probe into Seoul’s alleged drone infiltration last year. The submission highlights the seriousness with which North Korea views the incursion, seeking international intervention to address its concerns.

The South Korean government is reported to have recently discussed ways to respond to the issue. The discussions indicate that Seoul is considering its options carefully in light of the allegations, though it has neither confirmed nor denied the claims of drone infiltration.

In mid-October, North Korea claimed to have discovered unmanned aerial vehicles sent to Pyongyang by South Korea, warning of retaliation if such actions were repeated. This warning suggests that Pyongyang is prepared to take action if it perceives further violations of its airspace, underscoring the potential for escalation.

Both South and North Korea are member states of the ICAO. This shared membership may influence the organization’s approach to the investigation request, as it navigates the political sensitivities involved in addressing the allegations.
