Rakwon: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the country’s second offshore fish farm in the east coastal city of Rakwon, urging regional economic development to achieve self-reliance, state media reported Saturday. Kim’s presence at the Rakwon County Offshore Farm ceremony comes after his directive last year to begin construction on the project, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim emphasized that offshore farming would herald a new era for the fishing industry. He highlighted that the offshore farm would align with regional characteristics, ensuring the development of the local economy. The North Korean leader expressed confidence that this modern offshore base would effectively harness regional natural and economic resources.

Kim stated, “It would become a symbol of the validity and prospect of the regional development policy pursued by the party, a model symbolizing the future change of Rakwon County and a brilliant page will be recorded in the history of the county.” His remarks underscore the symbolic significance of the project in advancing the regional development agenda.

Late last year, Kim Jong-un also visited the Sinpho City Offshore Farm, North Korea’s first offshore fish farm, located in the east coastal city of Sinpo. During that visit, he reiterated his commitment to promoting regional development policy.
