Na Hye-seok Hosts First Female Korean Painter Exhibition in Seoul

Seoul: In a landmark moment for Korean art and gender equality, Na Hye-seok became the first female Korean painter to hold an exhibition in Korea, marking a significant milestone in the nation's cultural history. The exhibition was held at the headquarters of the Gyeongseong Ilbo newspaper in Seoul in 1921, showcasing her pioneering spirit and talent.

According to Yonhap News Agency, other notable events have shaped Korean history. In 1971, the government initiated the construction of its first nuclear power plant, Gori No. 1, marking a significant step in the nation's energy development. In 1991, a medical research team led by Lee Hae-bang invented the world's first insulin patch, revolutionizing diabetes treatment by allowing insulin absorption without injections.

The year 1992 saw the passing of Francesca Donner, the wife of South Korea's first president, Rhee Syng-man, at the age of 93 in Seoul. In a significant political move in 1993, South Korea allowed Lee In-mo, a former North Korean spy who had been imprisoned for 40 years without renouncing communism, to return home.

Inter-Korean relations faced a setback in 1994 when dialogue efforts broke down after North Korean official Pak Young-soo made threatening remarks at a border meeting. In 1996, Korea Power Electric Corp. was chosen by the now-defunct U.S.-led Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization to build nuclear reactors in North Korea, although the project was later halted due to accusations against North Korea in 2003.

In legal developments, 2003 saw Lee Seok-hee, a former deputy chief of the National Tax Service, repatriated from the United States to South Korea for questioning over illegal fundraising charges. In 2013, prosecutors raided the Korea Exchange Bank headquarters on allegations of artificially raising lending rates for profit.

Finally, in 2018, prosecutors sought to arrest former President Lee Myung-bak on 12 counts of corruption. He was later convicted on several charges, including bribery and embezzlement, and sentenced to a 15-year prison term and a substantial fine.
