Seoul:A newly established investigation agency tasked with handling major crimes has made its first arrest, apprehending a suspect 16 days after its inception.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the narcotics investigation bureau of the Seoul office of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency (SCIA) has detained a Southeast Asian national. The individual is accused of violating the Narcotics Control Act by importing 2.5 kilograms of marijuana from abroad.
The SCIA decided to detain the suspect due to concerns about a potential flight risk and the possibility of evidence being destroyed. The agency applied for an arrest warrant on Saturday with the Incheon District Court.
The SCIA was formed as part of extensive reforms to the criminal justice system, with the responsibility of investigating major crimes in seven categories, including corruption, economic crimes, defense acquisition, drug offenses, crimes against state security, cybercrimes, and offenses involving distortion of the law.
