Seoul: Disney+'s new Korean original series "Nine Puzzles" introduces viewers to the intense world of crime-solving through the journey of a profiler and a homicide detective working together to crack a murder case intertwined with puzzle pieces left at each crime scene. The series, which premieres next Wednesday, is directed by Yoon Jong-bin, marking his debut in the mystery thriller genre.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the plot kicks off with the murder of a police officer, witnessed by his niece, Ena, played by Kim Da-mi. Traumatized by the event, Ena loses her memory and becomes the main suspect for Detective Han-saem, portrayed by Son Suk-ku. A decade later, Ena receives a puzzle piece similar to one found at the murder scene. This leads to new killings, with Ena being the only witness once more. Despite suspicions, she and Han-saem work together to uncover the truth.
Director Yoon Jong-bin, known for his previous films like "Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time" and "The Spy Gone North," discussed his approach to the series at a press conference in Seoul. He emphasized the need to create a world that borders on fantasy, enhancing aspects like art direction and costumes to distinguish it from reality.
Kim Da-mi expressed her attraction to the script's mystery, noting that her character Ena has a childlike quality, reflecting her traumatic past. Son Suk-ku shared his enthusiasm for working with Yoon, highlighting his admiration for the director. He described his character, Han-saem, as a detective focused on solving an unresolved case that has eluded him for a decade.
The series also features actors Kim Sung-kyun and Hyun Bong-sik as Han-saem's colleagues. Yoon recounted a humorous story about attempting to bond with the cast, noting the challenges due to differing personalities and preferences.
"Nine Puzzles," consisting of 11 episodes, will initially release six episodes, with the rest following in two subsequent batches.
