General

Seoul: The number of jobs in the public sector slightly declined in 2023 compared with the previous year, after peaking in 2022 due to newly created positions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the statistics agency said Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, some 2,873,000 people were employed in the public sector in 2023, down 0.2 percent from the previous year, according to data from Statistics Korea. The number had reached 2,878,000 in 2022, the highest since 2016 when the agency began tracking related data.

“In 2023, the number of noncivil service jobs slightly decreased, likely due to the reduction in COVID-19 prevention-related positions,” Shin Ga-yeon, an official from the agency, said. By age group, people in their 40s held the largest share of public sector jobs at 759,000, followed by those in their 30s and 50s at 726,000 and 697,000, respectively, according to the data.
