Pyongyang:North Korea announced it has conducted an underwater test of a new precision-guided torpedo weapon system. The test, described as "significant" for the North's naval capabilities, involved the Zam-2.0 super-speed precision-guided torpedo and took place on Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the test was aimed at confirming the successful technical upgrade of the weapon. The test incorporated artificial intelligence technology for target detection and guidance functions, marking a substantial technological advancement.
Key national defense officials overseeing the test described it as a great success, predicting a significant change in the Navy's development. The trial demonstrated improved propulsion efficiency and rocket propulsion performance. Over 180 related tests have been conducted in the past five years.
North Korea's continued efforts to bolster its naval capabilities include recent launches of strategic cruise missiles from a presumed 3,000-ton submarine in the East Sea and the commissioning of the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon and Kang Kon destroyers in different sea regions.
