North Korea Unveils Advanced Weaponry at New Defense Museum

Pyongyang:North Korea has showcased a range of advanced weaponry, including the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), at a newly opened defense museum. The display at the National Defense Revolution Museum was part of the celebrations for the 81st founding anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK).

According to Yonhap News Agency, state media reported the unveiling of various strategic weapons at the museum. These included submarine-launched ballistic missiles, advanced drones, and the liquid-fuel Hwasong-17 ICBM, among others. The Hwasong-20, capable of reaching nearly any point in the U.S. mainland, was also featured. Photographs showed the missile with multiple warheads and a description of its extensive flight range.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un highlighted the new museum as a "revolutionary treasure," emphasizing the country's commitment to developing its defense industry. The museum aims to demonstrate North Korea's military capabilities and its strategy of self-reliance.

Kim was accompanied by his daughter, Ju-ae, and his wife, Ri Sol-ju, during the museum tour. The display of advanced weaponry appears to be a move to bolster the country's position in potential negotiations with the United States, amidst ongoing diplomatic expectations.

The opening of the museum marks a shift from previous arms exhibitions held in 2025 and 2026, showcasing North Korea's strategic weapons to both domestic and international audiences. The move has been seen as an effort to assert the legitimacy of its self-defense-centered approach while highlighting achievements in its defense sector.
