North Korea’s Kim Jong-un Vows to Expand Nuclear Arsenal After Inspecting New Facility

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has recently inspected a newly launched nuclear material production facility, committing to significantly enhance the country's nuclear capabilities, state media reported Thursday. Kim's visit, conducted alongside key party officials, underscores North Korea's persistent focus on bolstering its nuclear arsenal amid global concerns.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) disclosed that Kim's visit took place the day before the report was released. However, the exact location and further specifics of the facility remain undisclosed. Currently, North Korea is thought to manage uranium enrichment facilities at three sites: Yongbyon, Kangson, and Kusong. The report leaves open the possibility of a fourth location, though details remain unclear.

Kim Jong-un highlighted that the country's capacity to produce weapons-grade nuclear material has more than doubled over the past five years, crediting this advancement to North Korea's nuclear scientists. He emphasized the necessity of expanding the nuclear deterrent in response to potential threats and unpredictable long-term crises, indicating Pyongyang's unwavering commitment to its nuclear goals.

The report also mentioned an "important consultative meeting for bolstering up the nuclear forces" held at the facility. During the meeting, Kim issued directives for rapidly advancing the qualitative and quantitative growth of Pyongyang's nuclear capabilities. He described the event as a "historic" milestone in enhancing North Korea's nuclear strength.

Visual evidence provided by the KCNA included images of cylindrical centrifuges utilized for uranium enrichment within the facility, along with documents related to Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, which appeared blurred in the photographs. The recent developments follow North Korea's reaffirmation of its status as an "irreversible" nuclear-armed state at a key party congress in February, with a pledge to further strengthen its nuclear deterrent under a five-year military modernization plan.

In September 2024, North Korea made headlines by publicly disclosing its uranium enrichment facility, advocating for an increase in the number of centrifuges used for uranium enrichment. These actions reflect North Korea's ongoing focus on advancing its nuclear capabilities amid international scrutiny.
