Tokoname:South Korea's Oh Sang-uk successfully defended his title in the men's individual sabre fencing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, securing the gold medal on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Oh triumphed over China's Shen Chenpeng with a 15-13 victory in the final held at Aichi Sky Expo. This win marks Oh's second consecutive gold medal in this event, following his triumph at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, where he also won in the team competition.
In addition to his latest victory, Oh's impressive career includes winning an individual Olympic gold medal in 2024 and two team gold medals in 2020 and 2024. He has also claimed four world championship titles, including an individual crown in 2019. On the continental stage, he finished second in the individual event at the 2018 Asian Games and secured gold in 2023. He has been part of two Asian Games team event gold-winning squads since 2018.
During the 2026 Asian Games final, Oh faced an early setback when he collided with Shen and injured his ankle. Despite the injury, he continued to compete, ending the first period with an 8-7 lead. In the second period, although he initially fell behind 11-8, he managed to level the score at 11-11 with a significant hit to his opponent's head. Oh then rallied to reach 15 points, clinching the gold medal.
Bronze medals in the event were awarded to Artyom Sarkissyan of Kazakhstan and Seyed Ali Esmaeilzadeh Pakdaman of Iran.
