One-Third of South Korean Parliamentary Candidates Have Criminal Records

SEOUL — A report by the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice revealed on Thursday that nearly one-third of the candidates for the upcoming April 10 parliamentary elections have criminal records, with an average asset holding of 2.44 billion won.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The findings, which examined the backgrounds of 952 candidates, indicate a slight increase in the percentage of candidates with criminal records compared to the 2020 elections. The report highlighted that a significant number of these records among candidates from the Democratic Party and Justice Party may stem from participation in pro-democracy movements under past authoritarian regimes. Secretary General Kim Sung-dal of the civic group criticized the nominations, calling for parties to reassess their candidate vetting processes and to align more closely with public expectations.
