Seoul - An online petition demanding the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has garnered over 1 million signatures as of Wednesday. This significant public response has sparked intense debate within the country's political landscape.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the movement to propose an impeachment bill against President Yoon began on June 24 and quickly gained momentum, averaging 100,000 signatures daily over ten days. The Democratic Party (DP) has shown strong support for the petition, emphasizing that the swift accrual of signatures reflects widespread public dissatisfaction with President Yoon's administration. During a Supreme Council meeting, DP floor leader Park Chan-dae criticized the current state of national affairs under Yoon's leadership, urging immediate presidential action to rectify the situation. Additionally, Representative Jung Chung-rae referred to the petition as a direct expression of the people's will, seeking a formal evaluation of Yoon's performance. Under the existing legislative framework, any petition that secures over 50,000 signatures within 30 days is eligible for review by a parliamentary subcommittee, which can then escalate it to a full assembly session for further action.
