Padres Manager Shildt Confident in South Korean Pitcher Go Woo-suk’s Future Contributions

SEOUL — San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt expressed confidence on Wednesday that South Korean pitcher Go Woo-suk, recently optioned to the minor leagues, will contribute to the Major League team during the 2024 season.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Padres made the difficult decision to send Go to Triple-A El Paso ahead of their season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Gocheok Sky Dome, marking the first MLB game ever held in South Korea. The team had to reduce its 31-man traveling roster by five players before the game.

Shildt described the decision to demote Go as tough but necessary, citing the team's bullpen depth and Go's delayed start to the offseason as contributing factors. Despite a successful stint with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization, where Go pitched until mid-November leading to a Korean Series title, the timing affected his preparation for the MLB season.

The manager reassured that Go's demotion does not reflect a loss of faith by the Padres. Shildt praised Go for his professionalism and adaptation to the new environment, including adjustments to the baseball, competition level, and cultural differences. He encouraged Go to continue refining his pitching skills and command, assuring him of a return to the major leagues.

Shildt, who previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals, is set to make his managerial debut with the Padres in Seoul. He expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team, recognizing the historic nature of the game in South Korea.
